Not every cap works for every job. A trucker hat built for a construction crew won’t hold up the same way on a corporate sales team, and a fitted cap made for a golf event isn’t right for a jobsite. The style you pick affects fit, durability and how clean your logo looks once it’s stitched.
Here’s a quick way to match your buyer type to a cap style.
Cap Selection by Buyer Type
| Buyer | Recommended Cap | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Construction & trade crews | Richardson 112 or workwear cap | Structured front panels provide a stable embroidery area, while trucker/workwear styles suit active jobsites |
| Corporate teams | New Era or Flexfit | A cleaner, more fitted appearance works well for client-facing employees and events |
| Sports & athletic teams | New Era, Flexfit or Richardson | Athletic fits and familiar team-cap styles work well for uniforms and fan apparel |
| Outdoor crews & events | Performance or trucker cap | Breathable, lightweight styles are useful when comfort matters during outdoor activity |
| Casual brands & organizations | Dad hat or unstructured cap | A relaxed profile creates a more casual, lifestyle-oriented look |
| Bulk promotional orders | Value trucker or promotional hats | A simpler cap style can help control per-unit cost at higher quantities |
Material matters too. Cotton, polyester, mesh and performance fabrics can change how a cap feels, breathes and performs in different environments. For outdoor and active crews, breathable or moisture-managing materials may be preferable; for corporate or casual applications, appearance and comfort may take priority.
Caps are often part of a bigger order. If you’re outfitting a full crew, check out our custom construction uniforms in Washington, corporate uniform programs, custom sports team uniforms or custom promotional products for Washington businesses. All of it comes out of the same custom embroidery services team in Milton.
The front construction of a cap affects both its appearance and how your logo sits.
Structured caps have a reinforced front panel that holds its shape. They’re a strong starting point when you want a more defined embroidered logo, especially for business, construction, team and uniform applications.
Unstructured caps have a softer, more relaxed front. They’re a better fit when the goal is a casual or lifestyle look rather than a highly structured uniform appearance.
If you’re choosing between the two, think about how the cap will be worn and how prominent you want the embroidery to look. We can recommend a style based on your logo, intended use and overall look.
The Richardson 112 has a structured, mid-profile front panel that gives embroidery digitizers a wider, flatter surface to work with. That means cleaner logo detail on the front panel, adjustable snapback fit, and the mesh back keeps crews cooler on hot jobsites.
Northwest Custom Apparel holds preferred supplier status with Richardson Headwear.
For decoration guide to corporate branding, see Custom Richardson 112 trucker hats guide for embroidered business applications.
If your team is client-facing, a New Era or Flexfit cap gives a more fitted, professional look than a trucker style. These brands work well for staff uniforms, trade shows and company events.
New Era model comparison
| Model | Profile | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 59FIFTY | High crown/fitted | The classic, flat-bill “On-Field” look. |
| 9FIFTY | High crown/snapback | Modern streetwear vibes with an adjustable fit. |
| 39THIRTY | Mid crown/stretch | Athletic teams needing a snug, curved-bill feel. |
| 9TWENTY | Low profile/relaxed | A casual, soft-structure fit for everyday wear. |

Performance caps use lightweight, moisture-wicking fabric. They’re a good fit for golf tournaments, outdoor promotions and any event where comfort matters as much as branding.
We also embroider dad hats, snapbacks and beanies for schools, fundraisers and cold-weather crews. If you’re not sure which style fits your group, tell us your industry and we’ll recommend one.
We embroider a wide range of cap and hat styles in-house, so you’re not limited to one shape or fabric. We source through SanMar and S&S Activewear wholesale networks, giving access to the full catalog without minimum brand restrictions.
Trucker hats with foam fronts and mesh backs are a common choice for construction and outdoor crews. Structured caps hold their shape better over a full workday.
For crews that prioritize a rugged workwear look, Carhartt caps are another option to consider. They can make sense for construction, trades, landscaping and other hands-on businesses where the hat needs to fit the overall workwear uniform. To find the right cap for your jobsite, see our guide to Choose custom work hats for your Washington crew.
If Carhartt is the brand your crew prefers, see our Carhartt custom embroidery guide for more information about available styles and embroidery considerations.
Cap embroidery is not the same as embroidering a shirt. The curved surface, center seam and limited stitching field change how your logo needs to be digitized and stitched.
Flat embroidery lays thread directly on the fabric surface. It’s the right choice for detailed logos, small text and designs with fine lines.
3D puff embroidery adds foam underneath the stitching, giving your logo a raised, three-dimensional look. It works best on bold, simple shapes and letters, not fine detail. See our 3D puff embroidery on hats guide for design tips.
Some logos with a lot of detail, gradients or small text embroider more cleanly as a custom embroidered patch applied to the cap instead of stitched directly. We’ll tell you upfront if your design is a better fit for a patch.
Embroidering a cap is different from embroidering a flat garment. The curved front panel, center seam, crown shape, and limited embroidery area can affect how a logo sits and how stitches are applied.
Our cap embroidery process accounts for these variables during digitizing and setup. Logo placement, stitch direction, density, and the way the cap is hooped are adjusted to help the finished design follow the shape of the cap cleanly.
For caps with a center seam or structured front panel, artwork may also need minor adjustments so important lettering or details do not fall across an uneven area. We review the design before production and use a sew-out when appropriate to verify the result before completing the full order.
The goal: a clean, balanced embroidered logo that looks right on the actual cap, not just on a digital proof.
Here’s our process from order to delivery.
Pick a style and brand from our curated selection, or bring your own from SanMar or Alpha Broder, both within 10 miles of our Milton facility.

Cap embroidery pricing depends on three things: cap style, quantity and stitch count.
The blank cap itself, the complexity of your logo, and whether you choose flat or 3D puff embroidery all affect your total cost. A simple one-color logo costs less than a detailed multi-color design.
Our minimum order for embroidered caps is 8 pieces per style and color. Orders below that minimum carry a $50 under-minimum charge. Larger orders bring the per-cap price down.
More stitches mean more thread and more machine time, which affects your price. Our embroidery stitch count guide breaks down exactly how this works and how to keep your logo cost-efficient without losing detail.

Logo placement changes how visible and durable your branding is over time.
Front-center is the most visible spot on any cap. It’s the standard placement for most business and team logos, where large logos, names, or statements are placed, as it provides the most visibility.
Side placement works well for a secondary logo, website, slogan, tiny symbols, or short text. Back placement is a common spot for a website address, minor quips, or tagline without crowding the front.
Add individual names or titles to the back panel of each cap for $12.50 per cap. We also embroider individual employee or player names, usually on the back or side of the cap. This is a common request from construction crews and school teams to identify crew members’ caps and prevent mix-ups on job sites.

We have used Northwest Customs for 2-3 years now at Special Services Landscaping for hats, hoodies and uniforms. We have used the embroidery and the heat press and both have lasted and are stuff we still use today. Great company couldn’t recommend more.Posted on Google![]()

Unacceptable service and zero accountability. From one small business to another. We are incredibly disappointed with our experience here. I placed a large order worth over $1,200.00 for custom gear. This company already had our official logo and color specifications on hand, so there was absolutely no reason for this mistake. Despite having the correct assets, they completely messed up the final product. When they dropped us the product our Rep even stated... Oh this is wrong, don't worry you don't have to pay for the stitching. We asked what about our damaged gear? She said there is nothing they can do. So when we reached out to resolve the issue, management refused to take responsibility and flatly stated there was "nothing they could do." It is completely wrong that they ruined our gear and our hard-earned money for a botched order and then offer zero solutions. Save your money and take your business elsewhere. They obviously do not stand behind their work and have zero regard for customer service.Posted on Google![]()

We use NW custom for our program, their embroidery done in-house is very well done, identical to the proof of concept. The response time is great when making adjustments to the e-store or when working through third parties for patches. I’d recommend them for any size program!Posted on Google![]()

Yes. We regularly add individual names or numbers, usually placed on the side or back of the cap so it doesn’t compete with your main logo. See our custom monogramming and name embroidery page.
Flat embroidery lays thread directly on the fabric, while 3D puff embroidery adds foam underneath for a raised look. Flat works best for detailed logos and small text. 3D puff works best for bold, simple shapes.
Price depends on your cap style, quantity and stitch count. Request a quote with your logo and quantity, and we’ll give you an exact price within one business day.
Digitizing is free on orders of 48 or more caps. For orders under 48 caps, a one-time digitizing fee of $100 applies. On reorders of any size, there is no digitizing charge , your file is stored and used at no cost.
